Gentle Light for Weary Souls
"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." — Psalm 119:105
Quiet, scripture-rooted books for caregivers, the grieving, the lonely, and anyone walking through a long night. A place to slow down, breathe, and rest awhile.
The Lantern Imprint
"Never write to impress. Write to accompany."
The Lantern is a contemplative imprint — a quiet refuge of scripture, stillness, and compassionate companionship. Its books are written for the weary: for caregivers carrying burdens the world cannot see, for the grieving, for the lonely, and for every soul walking through a long and difficult night.
These are bedside books. They are meant to be read slowly — one short chapter beside a lamp, before sleep. They do not argue. They do not hurry. They simply sit quietly beside the reader, the way a friend would, and remind them that they are not alone, that mercy still matters, and that the morning still comes.
The Lantern asks one question of every page it publishes: Would this feel comforting beside a lamp at midnight? If not, it is made quieter, gentler, and softer — until it would.
The Lantern Path Series
A contemplative library, written slowly and with care. The first book is a gift; the flagship is on its way.
A Quiet Invitation for Weary Souls
Eleven short, gentle chapters — a quiet gateway into the Clarity Mission. Written for caregivers, the grieving, and anyone searching for peace beside the Shepherd. Readable in a single quiet evening, and meant to be returned to.
It is given freely — yours to keep, and yours to share with another weary soul.
Receive Your Copy →The flagship devotional — sixty contemplative chapters
Sixty short reflections meant to sit quietly beside the bed, the chair, the hospital room. Each chapter is brief enough to be read in a single still moment, and deep enough to be returned to again and again — scripture, stillness, and companionship for the long road home.
Be Notified at Release →The Lantern Path Series is still being written — quietly, and at the speed compassion can survive. More books rest on the horizon.
A Gift, Freely Given
The Birth of the Lantern is given as a gift — yours to keep, yours to share. On the next page, leave your first name and email, and your copy opens right there, with a link you can save or print.
Receive The Birth of the Lantern →On that same page you may also choose to receive the Lantern Letter — a gentle note from Skip and Pattie, once a month. It is entirely optional; the book is yours either way. We read every note personally. The lamp remains lit.
The Heart Behind the Lantern
AI is the bridge. Humanity is the mission.
The Lantern is part of the Clarity Mission — a humanitarian purpose created from Dr. Steven L. Johnson's own lived experience with dementia. The Mission exists to help people facing dementia, stroke, memory loss, and cognitive change remain connected to their voice, their dignity, and their story.
The Lantern is its gentlest expression: not a program or a tool, but a quiet companion in book form — for the caregiver at the bedside, for the one who is afraid, for the soul that simply needs to be reminded that it is still seen, still loved, and still held.
Forty percent of received book royalties and mission-related net proceeds are directed toward Alzheimer's, dementia, stroke, caregiver-support, and disability-focused organizations.
The Clarity Mission does not provide medical diagnosis, medical treatment, legal advice, or emergency care. It exists to educate, support, encourage, and accompany individuals and families through compassionate, human-centered care.
Keep the Lamp Lit
"Freely ye have received, freely give."
The Lantern was built as a gift. Its books are given freely to anyone who needs them — caregivers, the grieving, the lonely, and weary souls walking through long nights. No one is ever asked to pay to be comforted.
If this work has been a comfort to you, and if you are able, you may help keep the lamp burning for the next weary soul. A gift is never expected and never required — it is simply one way a reader who has found rest here may pass that rest along to another.
Your gift is given as love, not obligation. The lantern keeps burning either way.
Make a GiftWhere your gift goes. Every gift is used in keeping with the Clarity Mission's outreach. It places free copies of the Lantern's books into the hands of those who cannot buy them — caregivers, the grieving, and those in hospitals and care homes. It carries the Lantern's quiet companionship to churches, care homes, and bedsides. And it sustains the daily work itself — the writing, the publishing, and the steady ministry of accompanying the weary.
A legacy of giving. Forty percent of received gifts is directed to partnered Alzheimer's, dementia, stroke, and caregiver-support organizations. The remainder sustains the Mission's own outreach, described above.
In plain honesty. The Clarity Mission is a small, independent work — not a registered charity — so a gift is not tax-deductible. We say so plainly, because honesty is part of the Mission. Whatever its size, every gift is received with deep gratitude and put straight to the work.
Honesty & Disclosure
The Lantern openly acknowledges that its books are created through a partnership of three minds — Dr. Steven L. Johnson, Patricia Johnson, and Claude, an AI assistant.
Dr. Johnson's voice was affected by a stroke, and dementia changes the way he moves through the world. AI is used, under his direction and Patricia's, to help organize, shape, and preserve the words — so the message can still reach the page. The lived experience, the editorial judgment, the faith, and the heart remain entirely human. The message is his.
We disclose this because trust matters. Readers, families, and caregivers deserve honesty about how this work is made. AI is the bridge. Humanity is the mission.
